Ritual Objects
Intricate handcrafted artifacts rich with tradition and symbolic meaning.
Ritual objects have long been a key element of spiritual practice throughout the Himalayan communities. Each artifact has sacred meaning and is there to engage one’s mind on the journey to enlightenment.
The bell and dorje are two such objects which, individually, are examples of both master metalwork and spiritual meaning. Together, they represent the inseparability of wisdom and compassion in the enlightened mind. Further metalwork objects take the form of symbolic daggers and knives, made of brass, bronze, or iron, and many adorned with gemstones. The three-bladed dagger symbolizes the severing of ignorance, desire, and hatred – considered the “root toxins” that perpetuate the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.
Wooden ritual objects include zan par, ancient woodcarvings used by lamas for many different practices. Originally, the carved images served as molds to create offerings. The miniatures were a substitute for the real object or animal they portrayed.
The altar is perhaps the ultimate ritual object. As well as a display cabinet for sacred images and artifacts, it is a place to worship and make offerings of gratitude for the opportunity of one’s spiritual path. The altar is a representation of enlightenment.
These authentic ritual objects are among the many treasures of Himalayan art and culture. The handcrafted workmanship involved in their creation is an artistic legacy that we at Lotus Within truly cherish and respect.
