Thangka Paintings
Make your space a sanctuary with an authentic Thangka painting.
For more than 1,000 years, thangka paintings have adorned the walls of temples, shrines and homes throughout the Himalayan region, enriching their surroundings and spiritually inspiring those who view them.
An iconographic art form meticulous in detail, thangka communicates beautifully the philosophies of Buddhism. Some consider it a visual expression of the highest state of consciousness – the goal of the Buddhist spiritual path. Traditionally used as a teaching tool, these three-dimensional scroll paintings fundamentally support Buddhist meditation and practice.
Thangka is an ancient style of painting that takes years to perfect. Artists’ skills are honed and passed on through generations of thangka masters. Thangka is a complex format, whereby the artist must execute precise proportions of each deity. Hand-painted on layers of fabric, scenes are varied and profound, often featuring historical scenes, the Wheel of Life, or mandalas symbolizing representations of the universe. Finishing touches may include elaborate silk brocade frames and dowelling; particularly auspicious pieces are painted in gold.
Lotus Within has curated a magnificent collection of both antique and contemporary thangka paintings of the finest quality. Our pieces are one-of-a-kind, handmade artworks from local Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian artisans.
