Statues

Summon the symbolic guidance of an ancient deity to support your inner journey.

Throughout history, symbolic statues have been a hallmark of Himalayan culture, ultimately serving to inspire one’s spiritual path. Traditionally, sculptures were made to support religious ceremony and meditation. Today, authentic Himalayan statues may be inspirational, ritual, or decorative in purpose and feature all manner of divinity.

The iconic stances, gestures, and attributes specified by Buddhist and Hindu scriptures identify each statue. Figures range from meditating and teaching Buddhas to the popular Tara, Ganesha, and Vajrayogini divinities. Bodhisattvas, awakened beings who aspire to attain enlightenment, are recognizable by their crowns and jewelry. Figures with flaming hair and bulging eyes are likely to be the wrathful deities.

Statues may be hand-carved from wood, crystal quartz, or clay. Among the most iconic and sought after are those made from copper, bronze, and silver using the “Lost Wax” casting technique. The image is first carved in wax which is then encased in clay or plaster. Once the cast is dry, the wax is melted and replaced with liquefied metal. Upon hardening, the cast is removed and the statue is ready for embellishment, usually a thick layer of gold, intricate engraving, painted faces, and perhaps gemstone inlays. These Lost Wax castings are one-of-a-kind, never to be duplicated

Lotus Within offers a beautiful array of authentic Himalayan statues, handmade by local artisans, many of which are classic examples of the ancient Lost Wax method. Rare pieces date from 18th-century Tibet and Bhutan, making Lotus Within statues not only treasured symbols of spiritual guidance but also a striking addition to any private art collection.
